We started our day at Wai-O-Tapu, which is located about 30 Km south of Rotorua on Waiotapu Loop Road, off SH5. We arrived at Wai-O-Tapu’s thermal wonderland carpark as it opened for business and followed a circular route around the thermally active area photographing hot springs, sulphur rock formations and thermal pools. After an hour-and-a-half, we had to exit the main geothermal area to drive a short distance to see the forced eruption of Lady Knox Geyser at 10.30 am. After this, we drove to see Mud Pools, which are also outside the main thermal area.
