Wanganui River and Tongariro National Park featuring landscapes of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu and Alpine plant images

Leaving Wellington behind, we drove From Wellington drive to Wanganui, stop for some sightseeing in the town and take a lunch break. Leave the town and travel north on SH4, after 15 Km or so take a left onto the outstanding Wanganui River Road stooping for landscape photography, before backtracking to the SH4 and driving to National Park. Make photo stops at Raukawa Falls on the Mangawhero River, about 48 Km north of the Wanganui River Road / SH4 junction and then Makatote Viaduct, which crosses the Makatote George about another 48 Km north.

Tongariro National Park – New Zealand’s first national park

The National Park village borders the Tongariro National Park; one accommodation option is the Adventure Lodge and Motel. Lorraine who checked us in suggested some afternoon walks near Whakapapa village. We didn't walk but got some interesting photos in this alpine environment. In the evening, we went to the Station Cafe Bar & Restaurant for what turned out to be the best meal we had in New Zealand.

The following morning we stopped to take some photos in the early morning light of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu.
