Pilots Beach is just to the south of Taiaroa Head at the end of the Otago Peninsula and home to a colony of blue penguins. I didn't see any just one immature Yellow-Eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes), an endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, unlike the blue, which is of the least concern.

Photo opportunities of Wildlife at Pilots beach include New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri), New Zealand or Hooker's Sea Lion (Phocarctos hookeri), Varied Oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor), Red-billed Gull (Chroicocephalus scopulinus) and a White Faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae).
