Old World and Australasian Non-Passerines Photographed in Forest and Rural Garden Habitat

This webpage showcases four image collections of non-passerines birds in that I photographed in forest, woodland, park, rural garden and nature reserve habitat. The first collection is Old World non-passerine woodpeckers, cuckoos, cockatoos and parrots while the second is doves, pigeons, rails and fowl. The third collection is Australasian cuckoo, pigeon and rail while the fourth is cuckoo, cockatoo, parrot and pigeon. Full size images are captioned with the bird species common and scientific name together with the area and country where I photographed them.

Old World Non-Passerines (I)

This collection features images of Old World woodpecker, cuckoo, cockatoo and parrot species.

The great spotted woodpecker is a UK resident that was in my back garden. All the other woodpeckers are all Singapore resident species and the collection includes images of the sexual dimorphic common flameback and laced woodpecker.

The Malaysian hawk-cuckoo and large hawk-cuckoo are migrant winter visitors to Singapore while the Asian koel is a resident species. The banded bay cuckoo, chestnut-breasted, malkoha greater coucal and fork-tailed drongo-cuckoo are all resident Malaysian species. I also photographed a migrant fork-tailed drongo-cuckoo in Singapore, I've included an image for comparison with the Malaysian bird. The fork-tailed drongo-cuckoo (Surniculus dicruroides) was split from square-tailed drongo-cuckoo S. lugubris, see IOC World Bird List Ref 4.

Images of two IUCN red listed near threatened species; tanimbar corella cockatoo at the Japanese Garden and red-breasted parakeet in Bidadari Cemetery Woodland are also featured.

Old World Non-Passerines (II)

Old-World non-passerine doves, pigeons, rails and fowl feature in this collection.

The dove images are Singapore resident species except for the sleepy zebra dove, which is introduced in the Seychelles and known locally as a barred ground dove.

Several pigeon species are displayed, all are resident in the countries where I photographed them – the woodpigeon in the UK, the mountain imperial in Malaysia and apart for the Indian Ocean species all the others in Singapore including male and female images of the pink-necked pigeon.

The Indian Ocean species feature an introduced Madagasy turtle-dove on Mahe Island in the Seychelles and a pink-pigeon on Mauritius, which is an endemic species and ICUN red listed as endangered. The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (Ref MWF) estimates that the number of wild pink pigeons is around 470 distributed in five sub-populations in the Black River Georges National Park.

What is commonly known as a rock pigeon or just a 'pigeon' is an introduced feral species in Singapore and seen in urban environments around the world; it's an ancestor of the wild rock dove. 'Pigeons' have wide colour variation from white through to black. There is a small colony in the Botanic Gardens that exhibit this full range of colours. The image in the collection is very like the wild rock dove, now only found on sea cliffs on the west coasts of Scotland, Ireland and on the Shetland Island (RSPB, Ref 10).

Fowl images include an IUCN red listed near threatened Bornean crested fireback in Taman Negara National Park; male and female dimorphic red junglefowl in Singapore.

New Zealand Non-Passerines

The collection displays New Zealand non-passerines pigeon, cuckoo and rail. I came across a pair of endemic ICUN listed near threatened New Zealand pigeons on Long Point Road in the Catlins, they were happy to pose. Another endemic is the weka that is listed as vulnerable in the ICUN red list. I managed to get weka images at two different locations on the South Island's west coast, the birds are probably the same subspecies G. a. australis. The shining bronze-cuckoo, Chalcites lucidus lucidus subspecies is a breeding migrant that winters in the Solomon Islands and Bismark Archipelago.

Australian Non-Passerines

The last collection features of Australian Non-Passerines resident pigeon, cuckoo, cockatoo and parrot species photographed at Victoria's Wilsons Promontory National Park and Tower Hill Reserve; South Australia's Adelaide Botanic Garden and Victor Harbor's Granite Island; and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, New South Wales. Although some of the species can be found in rural gardens most prefer forest habitat.
